Sulfurized isobutylene is a high-pressure lubricant additive used in automotive, industrial, and marine applications. It is commonly used as an extreme pressure (EP) additive in gear oils, hydraulic fluids, and greases.
Sulfurized isobutylene is produced by reacting isobutylene with sulfur under high pressure and high temperature conditions. The sulfur molecules react with the double bonds in the isobutylene chain, resulting in the formation of sulfur bridges between adjacent polymer chains. This cross-linking process increases the viscosity and improves the load-carrying capacity of the lubricant.
The sulfur bridges formed in the sulfurization process provide a protective film on metal surfaces, reducing wear and friction. This makes sulfurized isobutylene an effective EP additive, particularly in high-pressure and high-temperature applications. It also offers excellent oxidation resistance and thermal stability, ensuring long-lasting lubricant performance.
In addition to its EP properties, sulfurized isobutylene acts as a detergent-dispersant additive, keeping the lubricant clean by preventing the formation of sludge and deposits. It also enhances the corrosion protection of the lubricant, protecting metal surfaces from rust and corrosion.
As with any chemical additive, the concentration of sulfurized isobutylene in the lubricant formulation can vary depending on the specific application and performance requirements. The recommended treat rates typically range from 1% to 5% by weight.
Overall, sulfurized isobutylene is a versatile high-pressure lubricant additive that improves the performance and durability of lubricants in a wide range of applications. Its EP, detergent-dispersant, and corrosion protection properties make it a valuable component in various lubricant formulations.
